Basil
- The basil plant is a native of
Africa and Asia, and some say India.
- Basil is easy to grow in small
pots; place a few in a kitchen window sill to deter flies.
- Basil seeds are tiny and black;
sow 1 or 2 in a small pot.
- Water well at midday in dry
weather.
- Harvest leaves before flowering;
pinch out tips of shoots to prevent flowering.
- Store harvested basil with tips
in water at room temperature (not in refrigerator - it will turn
black!).
- When cooking with basil, add at
the last minute.
- Basil and garlic blend together
beautifully; makes a classic pesto.
- Basil with green leaves have a
fresh, strong, clove-like scent; basil with purple leaves have medium
flavor and pale pink flowers.
- Basil was used in India many
years ago for disinfecting where malaria was present in the house.
